A crisis of Capitalism & Democracy

The basic intent for incorporating Companies is to make money and create wealth & economic well being for the stakeholders. In the process it helps the growth of the country’s economy and creates meaningful employment for the people. Behind the corporate doors it may be termed as incidental to the core corporate mission. However in Democracy it is the fundamental corporate social responsibility to provide growth, employment and economic well being for both the state and the people. Therefore the Government is expected to be a watchdog to monitor & regulate corporate houses.

“Transforming CAPITALISM. Improving the world for everyone” is a book written by Arun Maira. He is a member of the planning commission chaired by the Prime Minister of India. He is a frequent speaker at international forum on the future of India. His widely acclaimed leadership and consulting experience is definitely a source that makes the book interesting and path breaking. The book is refreshingly a light reading notwithstanding the subject matter. The book is a compilation of author’s thought pieces, real time case studies and his articles that keep appearing in The Economic Times. The book overall runs to some 200 odd pages but remain end to end a stimulating and thought provoking knowledge sharing session. The book is divided into four parts but maintains a logical sequence. The one two and three liner quotes at the beginning of each topic gives you an idea on what to expect further down in the pages.

The book talks of Capitalism, without advocating a total laissez-faire environment. It talks of capitalism in a democratic environs and goes ahead to pitch the importance & relevance of Corporate Social Responsibilities. It endorses government regulating the business houses but does not debate on where the line should be drawn to ensure intervention does not turn interference. The book is topical as well current to the global thinking. Here is my interpretation on..“Rethinking the Economy” a topic in the book that talks of evolving a brand new philosophy in the business of governing. The context of course is India. It emphasis on a fact that democracy is not all about election and voting, it is also about providing a platform to resolve the difference of opinion between people and the state. This topic is an an influencer. It reflects the current political & economical upheaval in the country. We can attribute this upheaval to government’s excess generosity in providing a platform to the civil society which has now proved larger than reasonable. It has almost made the government dis functioning…

In the ‘preface’ of the book the author mentions that ‘government has become his life’... Now is that his passing reference or scoring a brownie on his role as a member of the planning commission..? Overall “Transforming Capitalism” is a pleasant reading experience that allows you to take home lot of interesting facts about policy makers, present political environs as well the corporate board room logic s... Greatly readable...

In conversation with Bapu....

With 'Sare Jahan Se Achcha' and 'Abide with Me'the Soul-stirring martial tunes and solemn drum beats at the majestic Raisina Hills the "Beating the Retreat" ceremony marked the conclusion of the week long ceremonial functions of India celebrating her 62nd year of Republic. As the illumination lit up the edifices of Imperial India..my thought reached out to that day into the history of independence that finally dropped the curtain on a life called "Gandhi"...the man whose experiment with truth may not have jelled with today but his name has truly become the brand that remain most misused & manipulated both in trade & politics. As I key-in these lines I can read out the conversation that would have transpired between the "soul of Nation" (SON) and "Mahatma Gandhi"(Bapu)....Read on what I read..... SON: Bapu it's me,are you sleeping....? BAPU: How can you ask that...don't you know this day in the year 1948..I was gu...

But 'PAPU' Can "Vote"...'Sala'..!

"Sala".. is a generally accepted slang for both 'hum' the "Hindustani" and 'tum' the "Indian". Together this "HUM TUM" make the "Aam Admi"of the world's largest 'democracy'. This is our "INDIA".I agree with the TV ad that almost says "My India Strongest" in spite of the "Everest" of issues that surround her. Normally in this country the fate of the 'ordinary' people ie 'Aam Admi' always remain woefully harassed, pushed and frustrated through the year. However at the close every 5 years this 'Aam Admi' suddenly become extraordinarily powerful and remain wooed by all 'big, small and sundry' political parties of the country. Yes it is time for General Election. In the coming months for the 15th Lok Sabha, 714 million eligible voters would be 'bee lining' to the ballot boxes across 29 states,6 union territories to elect 543 members . 'Jaago-...

Just about...being a "Father"

A new world greeted them with smile and happiness when they... "Just met" and soon for them the wedding bells rang... Now, they are happily lost in their own world & together are learning to set- up a 'Home’ of their own... away from what was a home for them a little earlier in the year....That's "his" daughter & "his" son in-law. ..Being very adorable, the house has become little less chirpy after her moving out….. …."He" now does feel the boredom...but will never show it off... Because "he" is the father ...and expected to put on a stern face & always remain a 'matter of fact' person..... He is all set to explore & build-up a learning curve that may see him well in life in about a couple of years from now. After his graduation he may probably start living away from home in a distant land in pursuit of excellence...That's "His" son Being the darling of the house, "he" is...
